When it comes to our kids, we all want to find healthy or healthier alternatives to everyday meals and desserts but how about some healthful alternatives? What’s the difference between healthy and healthful food? Healthy means nutritious food and healthful means food that leads to good health and children should have the best of these types of food during their day in order to grow and be healthy and happy. We decided to create a list of healthful and healthy kids' school lunches for the parents in our foodie community.  When we decided to create this list we looked for creative ideas with healthful ingredients and we ignored all those classic lunch sandwiches we all make when we are in a hurry.

Thai Chicken Salad Wrap with Blueberries from Spoonful of Flavor

Blueberries have reached the super star food status due to the multiple health benefits they provide. The antioxidants contained by blueberries support our body’s system, protects the cardio-vascular system and the eyes from oxidative stress and they also offer cognitive benefits like improved memory.

Blueberries are amazing for children and if you want to incorporate them in their school lunch break, you can pack 1 cup of fresh blueberries for them to eat as a snack or you can make these delicious Thai Chicken Salad Wraps.

Black Bean Burgers with Pineapple Salsa from With Salt and Wit

Black beans have a great fiber-protein combination that can be rarely found in other types of vegetables. The protein-fiber combination provides many health benefits including digestive tract benefits, blood sugar regulation, reduced risk of cancer, due to the anti-inflammatory substances and antioxidants they contain, and many other health benefits.

To incorporate black beans into your kid’s lunchbox, you can make a salad or you can prepare With Salt and Wit’s Black Bean Burgers. They are ready in 20 minutes and even though they are healthy, they look indulgent and they taste delicious.

Apple Quesadilla from MOMables

We all know the old saying – an apple a day keeps the doctor away, but what are the actual benefits of eating apples? Apples promote heart health, they are extremely nutritious and they reduce the risk of diabetes, they can help fight asthma, they are linked to higher bone density, they promote good gut bacteria and they also contain antioxidants and other components that can help preventing cancer and other diseases. I think now, we can all understand why apples can keep the doctor away and why they are such healthful fruits.

Kids tend to love apples so you can give them apples as a snack during the day but you can also add apples to some meals you prepare for their lunch break. This Apple Quesadilla is a lovely lunch idea filled with nutritious and healthful ingredients that are also very yummy for any kid.

Bell Pepper Pizzas from Peas and Crayons

Bell peppers are an excellent source of carotenoids and vitamin C (more than twice the amount of vitamin C found in an orange). Due to the antioxidants contained by bell peppers it is believed they have anti-cancer benefits but also numerous other health benefits like prevention of various cardiovascular diseases and prevention of type 2 diabetes. The antioxidants also enable eye health in both children and older people.

Adding veggies to your kid’s lunchbox is a wonderful idea so add bell peppers to your list of vegetables for your kid's lunchbox. Also, check this Bell Pepper Pizzas recipe if you have a kid who is not a fan of fresh vegetables. Pizza is very loved by children so finding ways to make pizza healthy is something any parent should consider. Bell peppers are a great idea for some simple but delicious mini pizza kids can eat during their lunch break.

Greek Yogurt and Honey Mini Berry Muffins from The Well Floured Kitchen

Yogurt is an excellent source of calcium, protein, zinc and potassium, in general. All of these help children to have healthy, strong bones. But besides this well-known health benefits of yogurt, Greek yogurt contains less lactose than regular yogurt, more probiotic cultures and twice the protein content of other types of yogurt.

Honey is another healthful ingredient with numerous health benefits, such as alleviating allergies, being an excellent source of energy, boosting memory and it is also a great cough suppressant. Two tablespoons of honey per day can have a magical effect in someone’s body but honey is also a great replacement for sugar, especially in children’s diets.

Greek yogurt is great with fresh fruits and/or whole grain cereal and honey but it is also great in a wide range of baked goods like the Greek Yogurt and Honey Mini Berry Muffins we included here.

These muffins are healthy but they can be easily considered a treat since they are sweet, flavorful and very moist. Greek yogurt, whole wheat flour, berries and the sweet taste of honey make The Well Floured Kitchen’s muffins a delight for children and adults alike.
