ETG - Food For Thought

Cheesecake is one of the most loved desserts in the world. Most people think that the sweet and cheesy dessert originated in New York in the 19th century, but cheesecake’s history goes back further than that. It is believed that cheesecake was made for the first time in ancient Greece. The truth is, the ancient Greek dessert was nothing like the cheesecake we all know and love today and that’s because every nation and civilization that discovered the “cheese cake” decided to put its spin on it. Romans included crushed cheese and eggs in the mix after they conquered Greece. When the Roman Empire extended, other nations discovered the cheesecake and adapted the recipe to suit their tastes. In the 18th century, when Europeans started to migrate to America they brought their cheesecake recipes with them. The texture and consistency of the cheesecake was very different back then. Everything changed in 1872 when a farmer from New York accidently discovered the process of making cream cheese while trying to replicate a type of French cheese. This led to the famous New York style cheesecake that we are familiar with – smooth texture and amazing flavors from the egg yolks mixed with cream cheese.

Nowadays, almost every country of the world has its favorite type of cheesecake and some countries use other types of cheese instead of cream cheese. For example, Italians love to use ricotta, while Greeks use feta or other Greek cheese and Germans love to make cheesecake with cottage cheese. Cheese is not the only thing that makes cheesecake different today. Although the New York style cheesecake is still well-loved today, the pastry chefs, the bakers and the foodie community around the world are constantly creating new and amazing cheesecake recipes usually by adding something to the simple New York Style Cheesecake. From fruits and chocolate to alcohol and bacon and from chocolate bar inspired cheesecakes to vegan cheesecakes, the world of today’s cheesecake is creative and ready to satisfy every foodie’s taste. With that in mind, we decided to gather here the best cheesecake recipes from the online world so we searched our favorite websites and blogs and we made a list of 51 cheesecake recipes for the ultimate cheesecake experience.
