Brazilian cuisine is a mix of colors, traditions and contrasts. Whether savory or sweet, Brazilian dishes are surely delicious and nutritious. The dishes and the ingredients used by Brazilians vary based on the location within Brazil. Root vegetables, rice or beans are usually staples for many dishes.

If you are wondering how a Brazilian day looks like in terms of food, you must know that each Brazilian region has its favorite dishes and influences. For example, Bahia, the northeastern part of the country, has a combo of African, Portuguese and Indigenous flavors.

When it comes to breakfast, Brazilians from all around the country prefer fresh fruits. Mangos, papayas, guavas, granadillas and pineapples are amongst the favorites.

Papayas, bananas and coconuts are also used in various Brazilian desserts.

The breakfast is light and fresh so the lunch is more filling. A consistent Brazilian lunch can start with an appetizer and end up with a great dessert.

The main course varies by region and it can include:

  • Feijoada - black bean stew with various types of smoked meat
  • Cururu de Camarao - shrimp and okra gumbo
  • Moqueca de Peixe - fish stew with coconut flavors
  • Vatapá – Brazilian dish made from shrimp, bread, coconut milk and peanuts mashed into a creamy paste

These main dishes are usually accompanied by various breads and pastries. Pao de Queijo (cheese bread), Farofa (toasted cassava flour mixture) are two of the most common main course accompaniments. For those who prefer greens alongside a meat based main course, Couve a Mineira is a delicious side dish that goes great with everything.

Since the most intense and delicious flavors of a country can be found in its family recipes, we made a list of our top 6 Favorite Brazilian Family Recipes. If you know other Brazilian recipes, join our Family Recipes Movement and share them with our foodies!
