Lille is one of France's hidden gems and is a fascinating city to explore. Above all, the food is worth the journey and there are lots of culinary treats in store in Lille. Read on for some of the highlights of this amazing city in Northern France.

Taste the Moules

One of the major highlights on a Lille menu are the steaming bowls of fresh moules, usually accompanied by a large portion of fries. In Lille this is a must. During September Lille holds the Braderie in the streets where anyone can come along, set up stall and sell their unwanted items. Not only is this a great place to pick up vintage tableware but you'll also find that the only meal served at that time is Moules Frites. The streets are literally littered with mussel shells at this time of year.

Head to a Tea Room

Lille is renowned for its amazing tearooms and one of the best is Meert which has been in existence since 1761. Its elegant tea room is the ideal place to taste another Lille specialty- the gauffre. This vanilla filled wafer is delicious. Meert also has a very tempting shop with pastries and biscuits, making it ideal for a small gift.

Savour a Sausage

People either love it hate it but the Cambrai Andouillette is another of Lille's specialties commonly found on menus. This is a huge sausage suuffed with veal. Some versions have tripe and pork intestines. It is not for everyone but nevertheless is a popular Lille dish. Another popular specialty to look out for is Un Welsh. This is a form of Welsh rarebit and in Lille you'll see melted cheese in beer on bread with some ham served in a bowl.

Go for the Beer

Lille has some of the best breweries in France and everyone should try at least one beer. Many restaurants serve their own in house draught beer. Local brews include Trois Monts, La Goudale, or Ch'ti. In summer there's a cool Blanche de Lille whilst in winter you can taste a spiced Biere de Noel. Lille also has Genievre. a Dutch style juniper gin as a specialty.

For a foodie experience you can't go wrong with Lille. There is a lot more to the city than you think and the multicultural atmosphere means you'll find tagines, kebabs, and typically French specialties too. Make sure you head to Lille for the foodie treats.
