Srinagar is dominated by Lake Dal and renowned for its houseboats. But there are foodie experiences all over town. Herre's why a visit to Srinagar is heaven for your tastebuds with these foodie treats.

Shop on the Water

In Srinagar life on the lake is a magical thing for visitors to see. You just need to hire a shikara or boat and sail through the canals to a restaurant. But on the way you can stop off at the supermarket on stilts or buy fruit from a boat. These small shops are one of the characteristics of the lake and are fun to visit.

Buy Saffron

In Kashmir saffron is a local specialty and grown in the region. You'll find sellers of the spice all over town but be sure to get the authentic item. Saffron from Kashmir is among the finest in the world and a lot cheaper than you'll pay in the USA or Europe.

Taste the Street Food

Head to the area around the Shah Hamdan Mosque in Srinagar and you'll encounter the street food. Amongst the dried fish and jalabi sticks you'll see amazing breads being cooked. Roti bread and chapattis cooked fresh are simply delicious. Do spend time watching how they are cooked on the street as this is very interesting.

Go Chilli Shopping

Spend time in the old town and walk through the streets. You'll soon find the chilli merchants with sacks of spices and chillis. one look at a non-asian face and the sellers will advise you get the milder ones. You can of course be brave and buy a few red hot chillies but don't touch your eyes after handling them. These make great souvenirs and I bought a bagful for less than a dollar. I have a jar of chillies from Srinagar in my kitchen now and they really add zing to a meal.

Dine in a Floating Restaurant

In Srinagar a stay is not complete without a meal on one of the floating restaurants. You'll find typical Kashmiri food in very elegant surroundings and the experience is quite unique. From lamb rogan josh to sawa tea the food is definitley worth the boat journey. And afterwards you can sail through the canals observing daily life.

In Srinagar the food is definitely a highlight. Take time to taste all those flavours.
