The Swiss resort of Zermatt is renowned for its alpine senery and outdoor lifestyle but there is another side to the village. After all that fresh air, skiing and climbing the culinary side of Zermatt is a big attraction. Here are some of the highlights for foodies in Zermatt.

Eating at Altitude

Whether skiing or hiking there are some amazing restaurants that are inaccesible by car in Zermatt. In fact the whole village is car free. Some of the highest restaurants are renowned for their cuisine and are the perfect pit stop after a day on the ski slopes. Findlerhof is just one restaurant high on the slopes with delicious food. Zermatt also has two Michelin starred restaurants in town which are perfect for a treat.

Taste the Wine

The area around Zermatt is renowned for wine growing, especially a little further down the valley at Visp. This area produces some of the finest wines grown at a higher altitude in Europe. The grape varieties produce crisp wines that are so good they are rarely exported. Heida is a popular local wine that goes well with fish. In Zermatt you'll also find white wine soup which is ideal on a cold day.

Bite a Matterhorn

Not the real one but some of the sweeter varieties. The chocolate shops in Zermatt get most people licking their lips with their tempting displays. The Backerei Fuchs in Zermatt has chocolate nougat Matterhorns on sale which are irresistible and almost too nice to eat. There are cookies too and a fruit bread typical to the area. The staff are only too pleased to allow a small sample of their chocolate for tasting and are happy to explain what the various specialties are. Just try coming out of the chocolate shops empty handed here- it is not as easy as you might think.

Taste the Sheep

In Zermatt the sheep are very distinctive with their black noses and are really cute. One of the popular trips in summer is to hike to the farm where they are bred, meet the farmer  and the cuddly sheep, and then enjoy a meal in his restaurant. Lamb is on the menu but if you can't face eating one of these cute sheep then there are plenty of other things.

Go Traditional

Walk down the main street in Zermatt and many of the restaurants offer traditional Swiss cuisine. There is raclette, a cheese dish with potatoes, and the traditional Swiss cheese fondue. You'll also find Schnitzel and Gnocchi which are popular dishes here. Another way to experience traditional food is to make up a picnic and enjoy it whilst walking. A trip to the deli or the supermarket will result in good bread, cheese, salami and chocolate which are the perfect ingredients foor a feast outdoors in the mountains.

Zermatt has a surprising amount of culinary delights in town and there's no need to be worried about the calories. All you need to do is head off the the ski slopes and work out all day  to burn off any excesses.
