Arras in Northern France is one of the most beautiful and historic towns to see but there's also a foodie side to the area. Most visitors come to see the ancient tunnels and war memorials here but look around town and you'll discover more to Arras than meets the eye. Here's why Arras is a great place to stop and eat if you love discovering good food.

It's the City of Rats

In medieval times the citizens of Arras used the limestone tunnels under the city to store food. This helped market traders keep their food fresh and cool during the hot summer months. The tunnels earned the citizens of Arras a reputation and people likened them to rats. Even today you can find reminders of this in the chocolate shops. Hidden away amongst the colourful displays of sweets are chocolate rats- a very special souvenir of Arras. You'll find Babeluttes du Nord too- a sugary sweet but the rats are the stars of the show.

Dine in the Place Des Heros

The Place Des Heros is in the centre of Arras and surrounded by beautiful Flemish style buildings. It has an arcade running around it and you'll find lots of delightful coffee shops and cafes as well as restaurants here. It is a superb place to watch the world go by, listen to live music and enjoy the atmosphere. There are also several good food shops here too from a boulangerie to a fabulous cheese shop just off the square. If you are dining check out the moules frites or the crepes which are delicious here in Arras. Grand Place is another top dining spot in Arras and famed for its gabled buildings.

Visit the Market

France is renowned for its markets but in Arras you're in for a treat. Each Wednesday and Saturday the market comes to town and sets up in Place Des Heros just in front of the Town Hall. You'll find regional cheeses and fruits, vegetables, smoked meats and more. It is just the place to stock up on a picnic before heading off for a walk in the surrounding countryside. In December Arras has an excellent Christmas market which is perfect for unusual gifts and presents as well as some foodie treats for the holiday.

Arras is full of foodie surprises and a wander round this town will bring you to tiny cafes, neighbourhood shops and typical French cuisine in a relaxed atmosphere. It is a real delight to visit and particularly for its food.
