It’s funny how you can become so set in your ways. Even with the advent of Uber into our lives, we’re still reluctant to travel too far for a restaurant. And, why should we? There are so many incredible flavours to experience just around the corner. I’ve hardly tried all of them – and I eat out a lot compared to most Joburgers.

Still, you do get to try amazing things when you venture a little further from home… and, often, that happens when you least expect it. I, for one, wasn’t expecting to head up to Fourways to try a new steakhouse with the boys. But that’s what happened.

The kids’ dad had made a booking with restaurantweek.co.za to try a steakhouse in Fourways with the boys, but then he was called out of town on business. Although the cancellation policies are very lax, he really wanted the kids to give it a go – and I took the booking. That’s how we ended up at Prime Grill.

What I must admit is that the distance does put me off a little. I can find very few reasons to head past Monte Casino, but this restaurant might just be added to the list. Still, after a comfortable Uber ride, and with the boys in high spirits, we were greeted by one of the most friendly – and real – hosts I’ve ever met. Then we were shown to our reserved table and settled into the super plush leather seats. Before a single bite of food, I knew I was going to have to overcome my distance fears.

As part of their participation in Joburg’s Restaurant Week, we were given a choice of three starters, three main dishes, and two desserts. Opting for a steak at a steakhouse was hardly a decision that took much effort (though the fish of the day was Angelfish). I did consider the Butternut soup as a starter but was ever so pleased that I went for the Peri-Peri Calamari instead.

In fact, we all had calamari starters and steak mains – and they were incredible.

Both boys proclaimed their food to be top notch, amazing, two thumbs up, and other such positive reviews. And I, I have to say, I seconded it. The entire meal was special enough, but when they brought out a sparkler for my son’s birthday on top of a decadent slice of Belgian chocolate… well, it seems like I’ll need to make exceptions to go to Fourways every now and again.
