When your young man turns 13, you have to do something special. You can’t just have any meal – at home or out on the town. That’s just the way it is. At the very least, that’s the way it should be.

In Joburg, we’re hardly limited when it comes to fine dining. And, there are plenty of restaurants that I’m itching to try. But, my tastes and those of a 13-year-old boy are generally pretty different. True, Felix loved Wombles, but haute cuisine a la Français might not be the sort of thing that my sons would eat. And a special birthday dinner isn’t the time to test that theory.

That’s how we ended up at The Local Grill on a Friday night. It’s reputed to have the best steaks in Joburg, and it’s one of those places where the service, food, and atmosphere all combine to create an irresistible desire to return.

The birthday boy spent time considering his outfit, and more time reading restaurant reviews (which are overwhelmingly positive). And when it was time to leave, he could hardly contain his enthusiasm – even if he didn’t want it captured in photographs.

Here’s the special thing about this steakhouse (okay, not the only special thing, but certainly one of the biggest draw cards)… you don’t just have an option of cuts; you can also choose your beef. They offer grain fed and grass fed beef (you can guess which one is more expensive) as well as wet-aged or dry-aged on the bone. When it comes to cooking your steaks, you’ve got to decide between a lot more than medium rare or medium. There are three different cooking seasonings in play; house spices, black pepper, or butter. And you can believe that no matter what you choose, it will be incredible.

After ordering our starters (calamari and a kudu platter with salami and carpaccio), a manager came to the table to see if anyone wanted a tour of the kitchen. The boys jumped on that idea and promptly excused themselves to see what a working kitchen looks like… and to enjoy the sample of biltong they received in the back.

When our steaks arrived, we could hear the noise of all the customers around us as we sat silently devouring our food. And sure, the steaks don’t look like much on their own, but when you factor in the veggies, it’s a little too much for any one person to finish. Well, almost. If it’s your 13th birthday, it’s entirely possible to conquer the world.

So what did the birthday boy choose?

A grain-fed 200 sirloin steak, medium rare and cooked in butter. On the side? Matchstick French fries and mushroom sauce. For dessert? Chocolate pudding.

Now, what will we do next year when Oscar has his special birthday?
