It should surprise no one that I don’t have a raving social life. It’s just that I have a lot to do. And, let’s be honest, I’ve gotten to the point where staying at home is a treat. Yes, even though I work from the same location.
But, every now and again, it’s not a bad idea to break free from the norm. A change is as good as a rest, as they say.
So, I took up my American friend’s offer to join for lunch at Grand Central in Melrose Arch.
As you would expect, Grand Central takes its name from the train station in NYC. But, you might have thought that I would have had a better idea where Melrose Arch was. For a start, I’ve been there before – more than once. And, I’ve driven there myself many of those times; that should have cemented its location in my brain.
But, as I stood in the shower, I was piecing it together. In my mind it was somewhere near Norwood and Wanderers (which are two totally different directions in my reckoning). I had to look it up.
Then I spent some time looking at the restaurant’s website. The menu has American overtones without straying too far from anything South Africans. Before leaving home, I had almost completely settled on a salad, though I was tossing it back and forth in my mind.
Arriving at the restaurant, I enjoyed the references to the original Grand Central in my mind. Better still, the company – which included more people than I expected was a real treat. Indeed, I focused on that rather than eating my Cobb Salad. As Sunday afternoon wore on, I felt compelled to stay longer, chat more, and perhaps eat a little more of my salad. But, it was time to go.
Perhaps it’s a sign that I need to get out a little more often. Maybe I will.
