I haven’t been to many weddings; I’ll admit it.  I seem always to be on the wrong continent.  It’s a bit sad, but that’s the life of a traveller, isn’t it?  So, when everything was in the right place at the right time for me to get to Chris and Vendula’s wedding in London, it was imperative that we got there.  And mind you, that’s no small airfare when you’re coming from South Africa.

My boyfriend and I landed in London on a Thursday just before the Saturday morning appointment at the local registry office.  We spent the Friday shopping, preparing and just walking around the city with our soon-to-be-wed friends.  And I spent some time understanding just what this wedding was to hold.

It was a simple, quick ceremony with just the dearest of the nearest.  And that meant 15 people including the bride and groom.  Her family was all in the Czech Republic and his family in South Africa.  Although we were the only ones to travel from abroad, it seemed like we knew most everyone there.  That meant that it was a party of 15 people who were truly there to celebrate a marriage – and who were all excited to do it with each other.

After the ceremony, which was indeed as quick as you can imagine, we all headed over to the Albany Pub.  It’s a lovely, modern pub on the Thames.  And, if you step onto the large back patio, you can see Hampton Court just a down a bit, on the opposite bank of the river.

At the Albany, we had a special menu, laid out just for the wedding lunch.  And, it was so special that I didn’t even consider looking at the regular menu.  In fact, I couldn’t have.  I could barely make up my mind between all the delicious options available before the waiter got to our table.  As a starter, I was tossing between the Salt & Szechuan Pepper Squid and the Portobello Mushroom & Truffle Parfait.  I did go for the former in the end.

For mains, the big favourite at the table was the Confit Pigs Cheeks (chiefly by the same folks that ordered the Black Pudding Potato Cake as their starter), but that wasn’t sitting well with me.  Instead, I made my boyfriend get the King Prawn, Crab and Chorizo Linguini so I could get 18-hour House Slow-cooked British Corned Salt-Beef Hash.  In truth, it didn’t matter what we ordered, everything was delicious.

After lunch, we all trekked back to Chris and Vendula’s home just around the corner in the next village.  There, we drank Czech beer, played games and enjoyed snacks and desserts compliments of the newlyweds.  I would tell you that it was easily one of the best weddings I’ve ever been to, but you already know I’ve not done all that many.  So, I’ll tell you it was one of the best days of my life...  and the food was really only the icing on it.
