The Picasso museum has opened in the Marais after an extensive revamp, so recently I arranged to meet a friend there. He lives in Paris and had already been twice but agreed to come again as the exhibitions change frequently.

On arrival just before 10.00 (opening time), there was a medium sized queue and I suggest you go later as the queue had cleared when we came out at 12.15. Luckily, my young friend was already keeping a place for us, so I did a kind of queue jump and slid in beside him – don’t judge me, I’ve had a hip replacement.

There he was resplendent in a bright blue mackintosh and fabulous shoes. He was in luck again as the exhibition had changed since his last visit and featured mostly sculpture. The building itself is well worth a visit as it was beautiful to start with and has been renovated to a high standard. So I have to say that the visit was a fabulous success. Loved the goats!

Energy depleted by the museum, lunch was an immediate necessity. I was thrilled to be taken to a fish restaurant – Autours du Saumon. There are several branches, but we went to the one in the Marais near to the Picasso museum. It is small, simply furnished and as bright as I had anticipated, seeing as it is a Norwegian restaurant. The menu is limited but it is all about fish – perfect! I am never daunted by a limited menu. Some of the best food I have had has been in restaurants where the menu was sparse or non-existent and you take what you are given.

We each ordered a plate of fish and that is what it turned out to be – luscious slices of fish artfully and honesty spread before you. The fish is not cooked, but may be pickled, so it has to be as fresh as it can be. This fish was so fresh and firm it might have been alive two hours before we ate it. Actually, in Japan I once was served crayfish tail thinly sliced and arranged neatly behind the still moving head and legs of the poor creature. It was alarming, but as it was being prepared especially for my family by a chef we knew, I smiled and ate it. It still bothers me almost twenty years later.

This was not that kind of experience. A crispy tuna amuse bouche was served first, then the main platters. There were salmon eggs in a little cup, four kinds of fish and a small circle of potato salad. It did not look like a lot of food, but it was.

With a glass of wine, it came to 29 Euro each and was money well spent. I will definitely go next time I am in Paris. Will there be a next time? I hope so as still have to visit the Potager du Roi (the royal vegetable garden) at the Versailles palace.
