Where do you take new arrivals to Dubai for a good lunch? Well, it depends who they are and what they like. I faced this challenge recently.

The day was all planned and included a lunch stop at a rather pleasant café. But as I drove to the various hotspots, no pun intended as it is still very cool in Dubai at present, it became clear that one of the new arrivals had actually been here about seven times before. It would be easy enough to interest his wife as she was a first timer, but he was going to be more of a challenge.

We were cruising down the Palm Jumeira when it came to me. I could head straight for the Atlantis Hotel, but that would be too easy. No, Almaz by Momo it was. Almaz is a Moroccan restaurant I love. It has two branches in Dubai, but the one I was heading for was the one in the Mall of the Emirates (MoE).

If all else failed, we could spend a happy few minutes watching people ski in the grey gloom of a sunless ski field in the desert, in a mall – what could be more fun than that?

So from the Palm we sped over to MoE and made our way to Harvey Nichols; there is another way to get to Momo, but I always go through Harvey Nichols – through the women’s wear, up the escalator and through the menswear, then hang a right, still inside the store, and head to the back. Just as your friends think you have made a huge mistake, you pop through a gap in the wall into a Moroccan extravaganza. It has impact.

My guests handed me the task of ordering for everyone. To get the best range of foods, I ordered a great swathe of starters. This way you get to try all the usual Arabic goodies plus a few unusual choices like pigeon (rather sweet). There is plenty of variety for any fussy eaters. Luckily we had none of those with us.

The service was as delightful as ever. Elegant young men and women who really understand the food they are serving helped with the choices and kept a plentiful supply of bread coming for the mezze. Too often in the UAE, the people who are serving you have no cultural connection with the food and no real enthusiasm for it, so Almaz is a welcome change.

As we all pushed back from the table replete from the tabouleh, hummous, little sausages and tomatoes in a tagine and other goodies as well as fresh mint lemonade, there was just time for a toilet visit. Not worth mentioning you might think, but think again. The women’s toilet (I have not been to the men’s) is a glitter ball of a space decked out entirely in black, sparkly black. I get disorientated in there; it is like the opposite of a whiteout on the ski field – a black out but with light and sparkle. It’s definitely a talking point and was a great end to the outing. Also, at only AED100 a person, it was an inexpensive if not cheap lunch.
