I didn’t know it when we went for dinner, but Amarcord Italian restaurant in Blairgowrie received Marchio Ospitalita Italiana certification. It’s an award of sorts for authentic Italian restaurants outside of Italy.

You wouldn’t know it from the outside of the restaurant. Truly. It looks a little divey from the street and lies across from a small shopping plaza next to a fashion design school. As you park and walk to the door, however, it becomes clear that the restaurant is extraordinary.

Shown to our seats in a wonderfully hospitable manner, with a bottle of wine clanking in my purse, we noticed the clean, well-decorated space. It may even appear quite plain, though all the touches of décor and lighting are in just the right place.

Our wine was opened (they’re not licensed) and we ordered sparkling water for the two of us. Then it was down to the business of the menu. At first glance, it’s quite small.

But there are the seasonal specials on offer as well.

No matter how tempted I might be by all the flashy sounding descriptions – at any restaurant – it’s difficult to steer me away from a steak tartar. No really. I feel like I’ve ordered it at every reputable restaurant that offers it – at least those that I’ve patronised.

Not only was it delicious, but additional slices of toast arrived without any scoffing. And, I always need more toast for steak tartar and duck liver pâté (anther weakness).

Between courses, or rather after satiating my initial hunger, we turned out attention back to our surroundings.

Though we appreciated the Italian movie posters, we had no knowledge of the film, Amarcord, from which this restaurant derives its name. Apparently, it’s a coming of age movie set in Mussolini’s Italy and features a healthy dose of satire and sentimentality. (I’ll admit that I still haven’t seen it, but it will happen at some point.)

And then my Spaghetti al Tonno was brought to the table, and I dived into my food in a way the other patrons would have turned away from – and the restaurant was steadily filling to capacity on that Tuesday night.

With no room for dessert and the bottle of delicious wine enjoyed to the last drop, it was time to return home happy that we have such an establishment in our neighbourhood. It’s certainly a place to return to frequently – even more so know that we know it’s got a serious Italian seal of approval.
