The lobby bar - enjoy your welcome Prosecco in the company of internationally renowned photographer Steve McCurry's "Sensational Umbra".

A couple of years ago, I wrote glowingly of Foligno’s Felce e Mirtillo park restaurant, and of its two disarmingly eccentric proprietors, the Brodoloni Brothers.

Since that time, sadly, Felce e Mirtillo is no more, but it’s not all bad news. Quite the opposite, in fact. The Brodolonis are back in business and everything I said about Felce e Mirtillo in that article applies even more so to their latest venture, Apriti Sedano.

Nazzareno and Duilio Brodoloni - this signature photo adorns the lobby of the restaurant.

The fratelli Brodoloni, Duilio and Nazzareno, have relocated from Foligno about 15km down the SS3 motorway to the beautiful hilltop town of Trevi. Trevi would pull most visitors to this part of Umbria anyway, but now there’s a double reason to visit: Ristorante Apriti Sedano.

Apriti Sedano? Doesn’t that mean “Open Celery? What’s up with the name? Yes, it does mean “Open Celery” if you translate the words into English, but it’s also an Italian language pun on “Open Sesamo” or “open sesame” – the phrase that opened Aladdin’s cave.

And what an Aladdin’s cave this culinary treasure trove is. Enter on the ground floor and you are greeted by Duilio with a prosecco aperitivo and a host of little nibbles to accompany: special olives, little vol-au-vents, bread and olive oil, local cheeses. Stay in this part of the building as long as you like: Duilio is a big fan of Mr Bean and he loves an audience.

When you’re ready, head upstairs (or take the lift, if your mobility isn’t what it used to be) into brother Nazzareno’s domain. This is a lovely white table-cloth dining room, with the cooking area open at the far end – it’s all about the show.

Menu? No menu? Nope. That’s not how it’s done. Nazzareno will come to your table and tell you what’s coming tonight; there will be an antipasti - a large meat and cheese platter, a pasta or risotto, a main based around a fish or meat dish and sweets to follow that, all cooked as you wait.

Bacala (salt cod) and seasonal greens. The fish option for the main course.

If one of the group has a particular dietary requirement or prohibition, tell Nazzareno at this point and he will specially prepare a substitute. He doesn’t speak a lot of English but he’s been in the food business all his life and he knows what people can or can’t eat according to individual circumstances.

Tagliata (slices) of beef with more seasonal greens and a small serve of potato - option 2 for your main.

Red and White wine, water, sparkling and still, desserts, coffee...you’ll get them all. On the way out, as you pass by Duilio’s bar in the entrance lobby, you’ll be invited over for a digestivo, a limoncello, an amaro or a grappa to settle your stomach as you drive home.

Oh, and I haven’t mentione the bill. €30 per person...that’s for everything you have eaten and drunk since you came in two or three hours earlier. I have no idea how they can do it, especially since the level on offer is borderline fine-dining.

If you’re in Umbria for just a couple of nights and you’re looking for a memorable food experience, put Apriti Sedano very high on your list. Make sure you ring and book, because this place is popular.
