My friends invited me along to a food night market in St Ives. Wasn't sure what to expect, but as we walked into the market, I was impressed by the number of food stalls on offer. It was a nice vibe, all the vendors I spoke to were very friendly. I ended up trying a few delicious things throughout the night.

First off, for a snack, I tried a Filipino pork belly meat stick. Overall the flavour was pretty good, it was just a little bit dry. Next, it was time for mains. As we wandered around, a Mediterranean food stall caught my eye. I decided to try their lamb kofta roll. The lamb was soft and juicy, and the highlight was definitely the tasty garlic sauce throughout, loved it!

I also tasted some of the dishes my friends tried. One of my friends wanted a masala dosa from the Indian food stall. The dosa was pretty huge and the dips it came with were tasty. The potatoes within the dosa had a nice texture and a light curry flavour to it.

There was also a woodfired oven pizza stall, and my friend tried the vegetarian pizza (no cheese though, as my friend is on a vegan diet at the moment). The pizza was okay, I found the pizza base was average though.

Another food stall that looked interesting was the Kiwi/New Zealand one. They had "hangi" on offer (meat cooked under the ground the traditional way). I really wanted to try it, but by now my stomach had reached its capacity (well at least my savoury stomach had). When I was ready for desserts, we visited the Kiwi stall again and tried their caramel slice and chocolate slice, the desserts were nice, not too sweet. The vendors were very nice and passionate about their food, and spent some time sharing with me some of their food traditions...one other thing that sounded interesting was their fermented potato bread/cake...must try it next time...

It was getting quite cold, as the temperature was dropping as the night went on, so we decided to have a hot drink. We headed to the tea/coffee stand, and I tried a detox green tea - it had an interesting flavour, I liked it. It was a great way to help digest all that food I had eaten. The coffee stall owner was really nice, very helpful and passionate about her tea and coffee.

Overall, it was a great experience, and worth checking out if you want to have a good variety of dishes to try in a relaxed, outdoor setting.

It will be at the St Ives Showground for the next few Friday nights (5 May and 12 May 2017), then it will move along to other locations too. The same markets also happens in other suburbs on different nights too, you can find out more here: http://www.aussienightmarkets.com.au/locations.html

The market is open from 5pm till 10pm.
