Christmas in Belgium is all about family time, beautiful presents, friends and, of course, delicious food.

Christmas Eve is celebrated with close family around a table full of delicious dishes. Family members exchange gifts and enjoy their time together in a cozy atmosphere.

The evening starts with a drink followed by some appetizers or a soup. For the main course, Belgians serve turkey, chicken or seafood along with potato croquettes. For dessert, cake is usually the popular choice.

For Christmas breakfast, Belgians eat the normal Sunday breakfast: baked crusty rolls served with butter and jam and/or coffee cake. In the south of Belgium, on December 25th, people eat a special sweet bread (cougnou or cougnolle) baked in a baby-like shape as a symbol of Baby Jesus.

Christmas cookies are also very popular during holydays. They come in different shapes and sizes. It all depends on each person’s creativity.

We’ve made a list of popular Belgian recipes for Christmas. If you have a recipe that you would like to publish on Eat the Globe, join us today!
