Wiltshire is a region renowned for farming and stunning English countryside. With that in mind, there are some excellent places to eat and many are delightful country pubs. Here are some of the best ones around that are way off the tourist trail but serve high quality food.

The Langley Tap, Langley Burrell, Wiltshire

The Langley Tap is a historic pub in the charming village of Langley Burrell, just outside Chippenham. This is farming country and even the bar stools are made from vintage tractor seats. The menu here features local produce and the cooking is famed for miles around. Don't forget to try the beer as well- it is brewed just down the road.

The Biddestone Arms, Biddestone, Wiltshire

Biddestone is a beautiful English village looking like something from a chocolate box but without the tourists. That said, the Biddestone Arms serves such fabulous food that locals rush there for Sunday lunch in this eighteenth century pub. Reservations at weekends are a must. This is the ideal place to taste a traditional Sunday roast dinner and is so delicious that even the farmers eat here. Don't forget to take a walk through the village which even has a traditional duckpond.

The Walnut Tree, Mere, Wiltshire

I discovered the Walnut Tree after finishing a walk too late to be served anywhere else. This pub is an absolute treasure and serves meals from breakfast time to dinner. It is just off the busy A303 road and makes a refreshing change from motorway service stations. The Walnut Tree is a lovely pub to enjoy a high quality meal with local food and presented well. There are always three cask ales available and staff are only too willing to advise on what to drink. They also do bed and breakfast here, just in case you are not quite ready to go home.

The Longs Arms, Steeple Ashton, Wiltshire

Steeple Ashton is a quintessential English village without crowds and has a lovely pub right in the centre. After a wander round the village green, exquisite cottages, and even the historic jail, a meal at the Longs Arms is very welcome. The quality here is superb and most of the food is from local farms. From local ham to delicious salads, and Sunday roast dinner this is a delightful pub to eat out in.

The Wooden Spoon, Downton, Wiltshire

Downton is  just outside Salisbury and it is believed Julian Fellowes saw the road sign to this picturesque village and that inspired him to create Downton Abbey. The village of Downton is quintessentially English and has 3 pubs and a cafe, and no sign of Lord Grantham. The Wooden Spoon is on the main street and is a very welcoming pub with local beer from the nearby New Forest. The menu is written on a giant blackboard and features a wide range of food, cooked perfectly.

These are just a few of the great country pubs in Wltshire, England and a few delightful villages away from tourists and crowds.
