The Marais is a great place to stay in Paris. It is close to everything, being in the 3rd Arrondissement. It is filled with tempting shops, markets, bars and restaurants. Having stayed in the Marais three times recently, I was concerned that we would be lazy and choose to eat at places that we already knew, but that is not what happened at all, with the exception of Breizh Cafe.

For one thing, we were in a different part of the Marais. Also, it is very densely populated, so there is plenty of choice and each little area has its own characteristics. This time we had two well recommended restaurants virtually beside our apartment block and many more a short walk away.

Then around the corner we found Café Charlot – a sort of gastro-bar serving drinks and great pub food.  After a day of travel, we needed a beer.

Although when weather permits it, it is customary to sit outside in Paris, we were still adjusting to the temperature change so opted for inside. There was still plenty to see. Interestingly tattooed men engaged in chat with the bar staff and one rather hassled young woman rolled out a changing mat and changed her baby on the empty table behind us. Realistically, she had no choice, there being no space to breathe in the little toilet. And I appreciated the fact that no one made any comments and let her get on with it. Parenting looks to be quite a challenge in Paris especially if there is no lift in your building.

The beer was delicious; Belgian Grimbergen Blonde, beautifully chilled and flavored with a slice of lemon. I think it may have been quite strong too, if it's effect on me was anything to judge by. Not one of those paralyzing 9-10% strong concoctions, but certainly more than the 4.5-5.5% zone I'm most comfortable with. I had startled the waiter initially by ordering a pint, then he got over-enthusiastic and brought me a second. I struggled on.

It was eggs benedict for me and a burger for the Tall Guy (TTG). He also helped with the second beer. The hollandaise sauce was perfectly lemony. I now have to practice until I can do as well. The perfect combination of butter and lemon is still a skill I have not mastered but it is good to have ambitions.

TTG seemed well pleased with his burger and chips. In fact, we had every expectation of making a return visit as it was so close to our apartment, but it did not happen. Café Charlot were clearly doing great business every night of the week, though. There are lots of reviews from all the usual sources online, plus extra photographs as well as locational information.
