I do love Paris in the spring time, but you have to expect a little rain. I have lived in the desert most of the year for a long time now, so it was a surprise to me that my shoes were inadequate and leaked. We get rain in the desert occasionally, but there is no need to walk about in it.

So we were shopping on Boulevard Saint Germain, with considerable success when a sudden, heavy shower of rain forced us to make a quick decision on where to have lunch. Shallow of me I know, but I chose the place I did because of the elegant couple that preceded us in. It is generally a good rule of thumb to go where the crowd is, particularly if it is a crowd of locals.

There were two tiers of outside tables, one tier under a canopy and the next behind glass but still not fully inside. We went right inside because it was cold and smoky in the more popular outside areas.

The waiter was on us in an instant and we were settled comfortably. With food ordered and drinks in hand, I turned to my phone in that rude way that people do these days, but I just thought I would look up the café and see what sort of a rating it had. I had not yet adjusted to the ad hoc way we would be selecting eateries this holiday. To my delight I found that we had stumbled into one of the oldest cafés in Paris it having been established in 1880. It has also been a hub for intellectuals and artists over the years, including Picasso. A quick scan of the restaurant revealed no intellectuals or artists; they must have been in the smoking area outside.

Café de Flore specializes in drinks – hot and cold – omelets, soups, sandwiches and salads. The salad nicoise I order lacked dressing but was colorful and plentiful. I think others did better with pea soup and club sandwiches.

For such an illustrious restaurant, it was not especially expensive, but I will probably not be allowed to go back as I smashed a wine glass on the way out, making an embarrassing display of myself all because I had too many shopping bags.
