I have always wanted to taste some fresh fruit and vegetables in Italy, especially the numerous varieties of fresh tomatoes that Italy is famous for….so we decided to head off to the ‘Campo De Fiori’ markets, which is a traditional fresh produce market.

When we arrived, it was a relatively small of about 15 stalls within the square. There were also a series of shops lining the border of the square, such as delicatessens, restaurants, etc.

I went for a stroll for some fresh tomatoes. I came across a nice, old Italian lady’s food stall and was immediately fascinated by the broad range of tomatoes on offer. I selected some vine cherry tomatoes that were bright red and juicy. I also selected an interesting tomato variety that was round and had segmented indents.

I then ventured off to a delicatessen bordering the square for some cheese and crackers (Ruggeri 1-2 Campo De Fiori).

We enjoyed the tomatoes, fruits, cheese and crackers back at our apartment. The vine cherry tomatoes were amazingly sweet and firm, with a strong vibrant tomato flavour. The round segmented tomato variety had more of a juicer, fruity tomato flavour to it.

It was a nice, light lunch, and a great way to taste the local produce.
