We arrived in Shizuoka, an area renowned for its' tea. At the train station, we went around the corner and came to an area that sold green tea. We bought a few packets. The ladies serving us were lovely, they tried very hard to explain the different tea types to us, despite the language barrier. We also bought some yummy green tea lollies and wafers. The green tea lollies tasted like green tea ice cream as they were nice and creamy but had a very distinct, strong green tea taste to it.

We headed off to try traditional a Japanese tea & sweets set at the Century Hotel in Shizuoka. The hotel was very grand and elegant as we entered the main foyer. We made our way to "La Fleur", the lounge area on the ground floor where they offered the tea set. Unfortunately in Japan, they have a very strong smoking culture, and despite asking for the non smoking area, we could smell the smoke wafting across from the other tables...

We ordered the traditional Japanese tea & sweets set; there were several teas to choose from.

The tea set arrived rather promptly and we were amazed by how pretty the Japanese sweet was, it looked like a miniature apple. The tea was refreshing and light, and the Japanese sweet was nicely balanced in taste, it had the flavour of apple but it was not too sweet, just right. It went well with the tea, the bitterness of the tea and the sweetness of the miniature apple sweet was a great yin-yang combination.

What a relaxing, elegant way to experience Japanese tea and sweets...
