There's lots of interesting things to see and do when you're in Taiwan, here's a list of a few random things that we came across that was good fun.

Lover's Bridge

I know, it does sound a bit corny, but there's actually a bridge in Taiwan called "Lover Bridge (of Tamsui)". It was given the name because the bridge opened on Valentines day in 2003. It's quite a lovely bridge to walk over, but for me, the treat is when you get to the end of the bridge...as on the other end, there's a fish market offering lots of seafood. On the day we went there wasn't that many stalls still open as it was getting late, but we still managed to get a few succulent grilled clams and sea snails to snack on. This bridge is located at Tamsui Fisherman's Wharf

Frog Eggs Drink

It's not really frog eggs, but that's just what it's called literally in Chinese, it's actually a drink made of chewy tapioca balls (ie. the frog eggs nickname), served with citrus flavoured jelly. It's very refreshing and easy to drink, so definitely worth a try if you want to try a local drink. You should see it on sale in most street/night markets, it's quite common in Taiwan.

Savoury Spring Onion Pancake

Another Taiwanese classic street food to try, it's lovely and crisp, and has the delicious flavours of fried spring onions - it's hard to go past without trying one, as the lovely aromas will be wafting around your nose...

Ginormous icecream

If icecream is your thing, then you probably won't be able to go past trying a ginormous icecream - it's worth trying it just for the novelty value. We tried the mango flavour, and although it tasted more like mango flavouring rather than real mango, it still was fun to eat...but definitely something to share...as I said, it's huge! (this particular huge icecream we found at Tamsui, by the river). It was also great value, only about $1 AUD for such a huge icecream!

Sticky rice in bamboo

Another Taiwanese local food, great to look at and also fun to eat, it's sticky rice served in bamboo sticks. The result is fluffy, aromatic sticky rice to enjoy with your meal. We had this rice with a series of traditional Taiwanese dishes - we just chose what we liked and paid for it by weight/quantity. We were actually on a tour heading to the Toroko Gorge, and the local tour guide dropped us off at this "traditional" Taiwanese food shop for a lunch break, as he said we'd get to try out all the authentic local dishes - we were not disappointed. By the way, the Toroko Gorge is an amazing national park to visit - the huge marble gorge is simply stunning - it was also a perfect way to burn off all the food we'd been eating...

Train Lunchboxes

Even going on the trains are a culinary adventure, before you head on the train (or they also sell it on the trains too) - you can choose from a wide range of "train lunch boxes" - they include a range of classic Taiwanese flavours - mainly rice and soy-braised meat - it was tasty and very good value!

There's so much more to explore, these are just a few ideas to get you started...enjoy your culinary adventures in Taiwan.
