Cuba is one of the coolest destinations to visit right now and is renowned for its huge cigars, vintage cars, and music blasting from bars all over town. But Cuba also has a number of foodies surprises for the visitor to this Caribbean country so why not take a look at what's in store for those taste buds.

Eat out in Paladares

One of the best things about Cuba are its hidden restaurants which are often run from people's homes. These are some of the cheapest options around and tend to have a fixed price or limited choice. Many serve good home cooked food and the menu will include a main meal, sides and dessert. Beer is generally drunk in the paladares but there will also be mineral water and soft drinks. The Cuban Government allowed people to run restaurants from their homes as private enterprises a few years ago and several are successful. You'll find good paladares by talking to other travellers but avoid those who accost visitors in the street.

Taste the fast Food

Cuba has a thriving fast food scene and visitors will find snacks as well as street food. Plantains and yucca are often served as snacks here and it is not uncommon to find locals treating a visitors to a slice of juicy pineapple. In Cuba the local fast food chain is El Rapido which specialises in fried chicken and chips. There are perritos callientes or hot dogs too, and beer and soft drinks. Coppelia parlours are the ones with the queue round the block in Havana. These sell Cuba's best ice cream and are a bit of an institution in Havana.

Dine in a colonial building

Many of the restaurants in Cuba are in old crumbling colonial style buildings which just adds to the atmosphere. Throw in a jazz band and you have the perfect combination for a great evening out. Some of the most popular meals you'll find on the menu include Arroz con Pollo. This is stewed chiken served with rice and seasoned with a saffron substitute. Puerco asado is a roasted pork pice served with black beans and rice. The seafood in Cuba is good too and chances are you'll encounter Camarones. These are Cuban prawns garnished with mayonnaise.Enchilada de Langosta is a lobster served in a tomato and pepper sauce with other seasonal vegetables.

Fresh fruit is a big specialty in Cuba and you'll find papaya, pineapple, bananas and much more. The fruit juice shakes are superb too. Cuba has a wide range of foodie highlights and some unique ways of life. Whether it is a meal in one of the paladares or a drink in a classic bar, Cuba has something for everyone who wants to taste what this beautiful island has to offer.
