ETG - Food For Thought

Eat the Globe sat down to have a chat with Donny Chien to talk about his new food app YWaste that’s causing a stir in the food waste space.

What inspired you to start YWaste? How did the idea come about?

Well, my parents are from Taiwan, and they had to live through WW2, and as I was growing up, I was lucky enough to never experience hunger and strife, but my parents would often share stories with me of their experiences during the war, and how little food they had at the time. Their humbling experiences ingrained one important value in me, which is that food is very precious, and that it was important to never waste food. So, this all helped me to really appreciate food as I was growing up.

I have also been involved with outsourcing in the Philippines, and in some areas, the locals experience the daily struggles of trying to make ends meet, and some struggle to earn enough money to feed their children. This experience has also shaped by view on how precious food is.

Also, I have friends in the hospitality and food industry and I know it’s a tough industry to run a business. So, one day the idea of YWaste came about as I wanted to do my part to help reduce food waste by helping restaurants to have a way to offer their stock at the end of the day at a discount and yet not jeopardise their brand. Customers can also feel good that they are doing their bit to reduce food waste and at the same time have a convenient way to buy discounted food from brands they love; it’s also a great way to discover new food, as our app has a wide variety of merchants.

What's your point of difference?

I think the world is becoming more conscious of the environment, and people are becoming more in tune with social issues. People are realising it’s not good to overeat, and we need to look after this world, as we ultimately only have one earth to call home. Food waste is a big problem to solve. So YWaste is in a unique position to help solve this problem, as we give every day people a way to be involved but also benefit from being able to access discounted food easily.

Our app also doesn’t apply to food waste only. Other perishable items such as flowers are also available for purchase on the YWaste app too.

What's the hardest thing about running the YWaste Food App?

The perception of consumers is slowly changing, but the hardest thing is educating every day consumers. Initially, people may not understand what YWaste is and what the point is. We are all about using technology to provide a more efficient system to handle food waste and we offer unique benefits to both our merchants (food sellers) and our customers. As awareness for YWaste grows, the word of mouth effect will certainly help to tell the story to the broader community and help spread the word about our cause.

What's the most enjoyable thing about the YWaste Food App?

I really enjoy working with our merchants; as we offer a great solution to help them build their business and income, without jeopardising their brand value through discounted prices on our app; as we don’t give end consumers choice on selecting food/dishes; which reinforces our mission of saving food. This enables our merchants to reach new markets without cannibalising their initial market. I find great enjoyment and fulfilment talking to new and existing merchants, we are always thinking of ways to help support our merchants.

Are there any recipes you'd like to share with the Eat the Globe community?

Yes, I’d like to share one of my favourite Taiwanese dishes - Three Cup Chicken (San Bei Ji), where I’ve added my South East Asian kick to the recipe.

At Eat the Globe, we love to inspire people to try new cuisines and learn about new cultures, what's the top places you would like to visit (whether locally or abroad)? and why?

  • I love the sushi in Tokyo, especially at the Tsukiji fish markets. Over the years, I have had the honour of learning the Japanese culture and their way of life, as my wife is Japanese.

  • I also run an outsourcing business in the Philippines, and Cebu was an area that left a strong impression for me, their roasted pig was amazing! The prices there were also very affordable.

  • I want to see more of South East Asia such as Thailand and Vietnam, I especially want to visit the countryside towns. I really enjoy the sour and spicy flavours of this region.

  • My comfort food would be Taiwanese street food, there are lots of markets to try when you’re in Taiwan. My parents are from Taiwan, so I always have a soft spot for Taiwanese food.

Where can people find out more about the YWaste food app?

You can find out more about YWaste by visiting the links below.

On the day of the interview, Eat the Globe got to test out YWaste first hand as Donny ordered some Sumo Salad right after the interview, and we can confirm that the food was fresh as ever, and through the app, it was half the retail price. So, we had great food for such a good price, and we also helped reduce food waste, a win win all round for everybody!

So, what's the upcoming plans for YWaste, what's on the horizon?

We are mainly focused on growing the usage of the app, and we are looking to expand the merchants on our app too. We are always working on getting the word out there, and doing our bit to help reduce food waste. So far, the reception and feedback has been great, so it’s all very encouraging.

We are also looking to partner with other social enterprises, so feel free to contact us if you’d like to discuss any partnership opportunities: http://ywasteapp.com/contact-us
