The city of Edinburgh is steeped in history and one of the highlights of any visit here are the characteristic pubs. These are just the thing to enjoy a drink or two, listen to live music, enjoy a meal, and absorb some of the quaint and fasinating facts about the building. Here are some of Edinburgh's most interesting pubs.

Beehive Inn

Located on the Grassmarket in Edinburgh, the Beehive Inn was once an old coaching tavern. With 400 years of history within the walls it is a very interesting pub to visit but the highlight is the first floor where there are sweeping views up to Edinburgh Castle.

The Last Drop

Grassmarket was once the site of public executions and the Last Drop Pub is located adjacent to the place where these grisly deeds were performed. It is a dimly lit pub and ghosts are reputed to call the names of staff when they are alone. For a fine selection of whisky and beer, this pub is a good place to stop.

Doctors

This character pub is close to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary and was originally a coffin and cabinet maker's building right opposite the hospital. Look around this place and there are all kinds of memorabilia from the 19th century when this pub was definitely not somewhere to enjoy a drink in Edinburgh. Today it is a different place and yet another of the atmospheric places to visit in the city.

White Hart Inn

Edinburgh's White Hart Inn on Grassmarket is said to be on the site of an encounter between King David I and a white stag. It is reputed to be the oldest pub in Edinburgh and has its ghosts like most of the others. Parts of the building date back to 1516 with others dating from the 18th century. It has also hosted some of Edinburgh's most famous writers, notably Robert Burns in 1791, and also William Wordsworth. Today it is renowned for its whiskies, live music and ghosts.

The Jekyll and Hyde

The famous book Dr Jekyll and My Hyde was written in Edinburgh and based on some of the characters. The pub of the same name is on Hanover Street and renowned for its gothic atmosphere. The pub has a warren of rooms which are full of character and pleasant places to enjoy a drink. The piece de resistance has to be trying to find the loo. These are in a room that appears to be a library and where the loo doors are disguised as bookshelves.

Deacon Brodie's Tavern

Deacon Brodie was a notorious character in Edinburgh who was a cabinet maker by day and a thief by night. It is said that Robert Louis Stevenson based his Jekyll and Hyde character on him. Today the Deacon Brodie Tavern stands just a few steps from where this character was born and died. It is one of the more prominent buildings on the Royal Mile and is a pleasant place to enjoy a drink.

Drinking in many of Edinburgh's pubs is not only a rich foodie experience with craft beers and whiskies, but is also quite unique with the history and characters associated with the buildings and local area.
