Recently I went on a food experience in the U.A.E. You would think that having lived here for more than a decade, I would know where to get good Arab food and I do. But it seems there are many kinds of good food. So I joined a Frying Pan food trail to eat Arab food (they do several different tours and the next one for me is the fish tour) and was guided through parts of Old Dubai by a pretty young guide who had been brought up in that area 15 years or more ago.

At this time of year, in fact from October to March when the weather is cool, it is a fun part of Dubai to be in, as it is full of people out seeking a delicious meal or buying their groceries in the evening. It is so much more vibrant than trawling the malls. Yes, there are plenty of people in the malls too, but the noise can get oppressive.

We started with a little falafel shop in Dubai’s Murraqqabat Street. Actually, it is really two different food outlets (hence the two names - Qwaider Al Nabulsi and Sultan Dubai Falafel) serving falafels and other delicious goodies including meat dishes. One part of it is for those who just want to pop in and get a quick falafel sandwich served straight from the fryer. It comes with accompaniments of your choice but must include hummus and aioli.

I have never had such light falafels but perhaps that was because we ate them straight from the fryer on a bed of hummus. Chick peas, found in both falafels and hummus are an important food in the Middle East. They are easy to grow in hot conditions and provide protein. They are also versatile. I have noticed that some cultures have one staple food that appears in different guises throughout the food and in the Middle East, while there can be a lot of meat, the chick pea is a reliable staple along with unleavened bread.

Next, we went to the restaurant part and indulged further. Supporting my theory about the ubiquitous nature of the chick pea, we started with falafel mahshi – big round falafel stuffed with chilli paste, sumac and onions served with hummus, and sauces including coriander, parsley and lemon. That was followed by a Palestinian chicken pie, slow cooked with onions, sumac and pine nuts and served on a flat bread. This was accompanied by oven-roasted eggplant and cauliflower.

It was all delicious, but I was still marveling over how good the falafels had been. Next time I will know to have fewer falafels and save more space. This is also a very cheap way to eat really good, filling food. A falafel sandwich (basically a take-away) is incredibly cheap - usually no more than a few dirhams, and while the sit down-down options mentioned above are a little more expensive, it all adds up to not only a very satisfying local culinary experience, but a very economical one as well. I've rated the cost as just one star, but maybe one and a half might be more accurate for the sit-down, eat-in options.
