There are plenty of cute pubs to choose from in the villages in Kent, UK. In the village of Tenterden, which is by no means large, we encountered three, all within spitting distance of each other. I believe the tall guy (TTG) and his friend Mr Ed, tried all three. I only managed one but I was impressed by the fact that it had a tiled fireplace in the women’s toilets. It didn't look as though it was operational.

The Ferry Inn, just outside a lovely little village called Appledore and nominally in another called Stone, was the one recommended to us and so we tried it out. I say nominally in a village called Stone as there was little sign of a village; a collection of houses and farms, yes. A village, not really.

Still the pub was charming with outdoor tables front and back, with the back ones beside the stream by far preferred by the locals. We stuck with the bar area as it was cute and the weather was inclement. There were hops hanging from the roof, the barman was enchantingly abusive to two men he clearly knew well, and it felt good.

Seated at a stripped pine table, we delved into the menu. We had heard that the seafood was great so we both opted for the scallops and they were sensational. Just three scallops, but it was only a starter and each one a flavor filled miracle. I was especially pleased that they did not take the orange roe off as they do in Dubai. I am sure it adds to the flavor.

The second course saw a great divide between TTG and I. He went for a sort of burger that included chorizo and beef wrapped in unleavened bread and came with corn and chips. It was delicious. I suspect the corn was rolled in honey before grilling, a trick I shall try on the corn ripening in my garden right now.

I ordered the thick cut ham and eggs, which was exactly what it said it was. I have seldom eaten so much pork and fat but why not?

After these two courses and a couple of beers each, all we were fit for was a deep afternoon sleep followed by another visit to the Tenterden steam train.
