I don’t know if you know this or not, but I don’t like cheese.

Really.

I know that’s difficult for some people to understand, but I don’t like cheese. I’m working on it, mind you. I’ve been pushing myself to try more cheeses and enjoy them more regularly. But, I’m nowhere close to eating melty cheese; I think it’s gross.

So, pizza is no fun for me.

But, give me a flammkuchen, and I am happiness itself.

Flammkuchen is a pizza-like bread spread with sour cream and then topped with an assortment of meats or vegetables and baked at a high heat for a short time. Essentially, it’s pizza without cheese, but with a dairy product I wholly approve of – sour cream.

While travelling through Frankfurt, it wasn’t a question of whether I would eat flammkuchen; it was only a matter of where and when.

The boys and I toured churches, walked around the square, window-shopped, and generally just enjoyed being in Germany. But, eventually, it was time to eat. And I knew exactly what I was after – a place with flammkuchen (and beer) and preferably with a nice view, at least a look at beautiful, old German buildings.

That’s how we settled on Alten Limpurg. It had everything I wanted, even if it did feel rather touristy. I was after the flammkuchen. And the one I ordered did not disappoint. I may have even made some inappropriate noises. (The boys will tell you that I did.)

But, try as I might, I couldn’t get my kids to indulge. I have a feeling they couldn’t understand it. Maybe it was the sour cream. Maybe it was the onions. Who knows? All I know is that they missed out while snacking on bretzels (yes, pretzels with a B, German-style). After all, flammkuchen = happiness.

And, the Flammkuchen at Alten Limpurg are exceptional.
