These days, I get a lot of German in my life. I’m at the German school just about every day of the week. Well, day or night. Between German lessons, school runs, and organizing class events, I am almost constantly in contact with German culture. And that’s before you consider the German movies and books taking over my life.

But, there’s nothing like being in Germany itself – even if it’s just for the day.

It’s even more fun when travelling back from the States with my kids. We just love exploring and hanging out in Europe.

And, as you know, the cornerstone of breaking a transcontinental trip in Europe is getting out to the centre of town and getting some food. That was always my plan – even before the immigration officers complimented my German. It just became more fun to find a place to frühstück when I was feeling so confident about my language skills.

We found the perfect little place on the river across from one of the half dozen churches in the centre of the city. And we settled into Mainkai, excited to stretch our legs and see what the city had in store for us that day.

And wow oh wow was it a terrific breakfast menu. Page after page. Option after option. And I was enjoying every time I had to translate a word for my kids.

Frankfurt is far from Berlin, where I want to live some day (though it’s obviously closer than Johannesburg). And, it’s always difficult to leave my family in the States. But, somehow, there’s nothing like frühstück fun in Frankfurt to make everything feel alright…

… especially when the breakfast is filling, delicious, and just a few corners away from the main tourist joints. (And someplace everyone visiting Frankfurt should stop off for a meal.)
