Lyon is known as the gastronomic capital of France, so I really wanted to experience a cooking lesson while I was visiting Lyon. I asked our hotel receptionist for some recommendations for cooking lessons, and he showed us a couple of options. I ended up finding one of the suggested venues: L'atelier des Chefs.

After speaking with the staff at L'atelier des Chefs, the only class that was coming up was in French only and designed for locals (they also run classes in English but I couldn't fit in any English speaking classes, as I only had a few days left in Lyon). I decided to bite the bullet, and went with the French speaking cooking class - even though I can't speak a word of French! I figured it would be a great way to meet the locals and learn how to cook through body language (since I don't know a word of French).

On the day of the cooking lesson, I turned up to the cooking class kitchen not knowing exactly how it would turn out, but I was excited nonetheless. I had booked a 3 course lunch cooking class for 54 euros, which I found quite reasonable for a 3 course meal (and of course it included the experience of cooking the meals too).

The chef began the lesson asking if anyone couldn't speak French, and I was the only one that put up my hand....all my classmates looked over in my direction, the chef then proceeded to speak a few lines in French, the class had a bit of a laugh, and the lesson continued...I had no idea what the chef had said, but I guess that's half the fun.

We split into groups of 4 to do the cooking. It was nice mingling with the locals, as we cooked the dishes together. We ended up cooking a French Mushroom Soup, Grilled Fish & Polenta; and for dessert, Caramel Mille-feuille. Luckily, there was a guy on the same table as me who could speak English. Throughout the lesson, he would translate bits and pieces for me - it's always nice to meet a friendly local.

I thoroughly enjoyed the lesson, and truly gained a deeper appreciation of the French way of life, and their immense passion for food. There was quite a lot of effort required to make each dish, but it was worth it, as I felt a great sense of satisfaction and appreciation of the food once we sat down to enjoy the dishes. Overall, the mushroom soup was my favourite dish, it had such an intense but well-rounded mushroom taste.
