One of my favourite things about Europe is that moment when you turn the corner and a cathedral just springs up in front of you.  Indeed, the whole point of driving from Basel to Freiburg was to experience just such a moment.  Well, that, and my boyfriend had never walked through a German Münster before – or any European cathedral for that matter.  And, it is a short drive from Basel when you think about it.

We parked nearby and walked through the Altstadt for the sole purpose of getting to the Freiburger Münster.  It really was a short walk through the town when the towers emerged in front of us.  Well, to be fair, we were greeted by the food market circling the münster.  Now, the church tower is under renovation so, we didn’t get the full effect, but the inside was just as incredible as I remember.

But, touring through churches is hungry work, especially when there is a full blown food market outside.  So, as we emerged from the münster it was a toss-up between the bratwurst sandwiches whose greasy goodness smells and the Flammekuchen in the cafes across the way.  We really thought hard about the latter, but the sausage won us over.  In fact, it was that moment in your dreams where you’re trying to get away, but you can’t – something is holding you back.  In his case, it was the smell of grilling meat.  Unable to defend ourselves against the bratwursts and bockwursts, we picked a stand frequented by city workers on their lunch break.

And, as you can tell, we couldn’t even pause to take pictures – the food was simply too good.  So we stood, like the locals, munching on our sausages and taking in the view.  It was a perfect day trip to Germany... complete with münster and wurstchens.  Who could ask for more?
