Can you believe this is the ceiling of a grocery store?

Okay, the building didn’t start out as a grocery store; it was once the Ameritrust Building in downtown Cleveland. It’s part of the 9 Complex featuring commercial and residential buildings at the corner of East 9th and Euclid in downtown Cleveland. Heinen’s, the grocery store, occupies The Rotunda.

Let me put it out there from the beginning… I am in love with Heinen’s.

The much smaller and hardly as architecturally stunning branch near my family home is almost always one of my first stops when I get to Cleveland. They have amazing produce – the sort of fruit and veggies I can only dream about in South Africa. Then there is the butchery (which is how this Cleveland-based grocery chain was founded) which is almost impossible to pass without stopping. The olive bar, the deli, the bakery, the specialty products. This is the store of dreams.

It seemed only natural to take a peek inside Heinen’s at the 9 when we were in the area. And, it was every bit as ah-maz-ing as I thought it would be.

Walking into the store, I felt the tingling sensation that hits as I walk through the enormous doors of European cathedrals. Yes, the architecture plays a part, but it’s also the Heinen’s experience. It’s the gorgeous smells and fresh produce that begs you to come closer.

This location, however, is more than just a grocery store. They have wraps and salads made to order and seats to enjoy these foods on site. You can also grab some sushi or a rice bowl at the Global Grill. Coffee lovers will have a difficult time passing the espresso bar without pausing.

And, it’s easy to sample some wine while looking for the perfect glass to complement dinner. These handy machines make it easy to savour a sip or sit with friends over a glass. And don’t worry, there are appetizers on offer alongside.

Really, you could make an evening out of this grocery store – or maybe several. I wish I could. This is the way grocery shopping – slash - food enjoying should be. It’s possible that you can’t call yourself a foodie in Cleveland until you’ve done your shopping here at least once.
