I Have a Saturday Routine

Having spent so much of my young adult years travelling, I find it difficult to develop routines.  I can barely keep one going for more than three days.  It’s not that I don’t want to create more positive habits; I just don’t seem to be able to do it.

Except one magical routine has somehow crept into my life recently.

I joined a new gym.  And even though I go nearly every day, I almost never make it there at the same time – or for the same length of time every day.  Except Saturdays.  Every Saturday morning, I meet up with a friend at 7am to work out together.

Now, there’s no way that I would be able to maintain this routine if it didn’t coincide with breakfast, which fortunately, it does.  My gym happens to be located in a shopping centre which has two grocery stores and two restaurants.  (There’s also a fro-yo place, but I’m not sure that counts as a restaurant; I know that’s just me though.)  And after my first early morning gym session, I realised that my favourite schwarma place has a breakfast buffet on Saturdays.

For all of ZAR 85 (which, currently, equals about USD 8.50), Tei Avon offers a full continental and English breakfast buffet.  Well, almost complete.  The owners are Jewish, so the sausages are beef instead of pork.  But, since they lay out the smoked salmon and pastrami, I’m not even a little fussed about the lack of pig for breakfast.  Better still, bottomless coffee and juice is included in the price.

The best part about this surprising Saturday routine is that somehow the buffet reminds me of European breakfasts, so I get this strange tingly feeling as if I am travelling whenever we walk in there.  And now, there’s no way to leave the kids at home asleep.  They want to hit the gym – and one of the rare buffets available in Johannesburg.

Certainly it is worth it if you happen to be in the area between 9 and 11am over the weekend.  But, if you can’t move too early in the day, then consider grabbing a table for lunch or dinner.  Tei Avon has a lovely tapas menu if you’re not keen on schwarmas (though you should try the Lebanese schwarma at least once in your life).  The restaurant is licensed, though it doesn’t have the greatest selection of alcohol.  But you hardly need that at 9am, unless you’re calling for bloody marys – which I won’t be.

After all, hitting the gym first is one of the few routines that I have.  And you can’t ask me to change it for as long as I am in the country.  That and the breakfast is totally worth it alone (and the coffee is bottomless).
