Wherever you go in the world, you’ll find the places where the locals eat.  And, by locals, I do mean the local labours and municipal workers.  Sometimes it’s food stands or food trucks, at other times, it is a bit of fast food takeaways.  And, if you happen to be working in Baselstadt, then there’s a fair chance that you’re having your mid-morning break at Restaurant zur Traube in Bottmingen.

Now, there is nothing fancy about this place.  But, it is warm and welcoming.  The owner is wholly dedicated to cleaning – and ensuring that her guests are happy.  And that’s just the beginning.  The restaurant is always seasonally dressed, and we had just caught the end of autumn when we entered for breakfast on a Thursday morning.

Breakfast at zur Traube could probably be whatever you as for, but the locals tend to dive in for a frikkadel sausage which is served with a basket of bread and some mustard.  Well, that or slices of toast with fish or egg salad.  But then, there are also the sandwiches that you can pick off the table if you’re in a hurry.

And, as with any solid, locally frequented restaurant, it’s affordable.  That’s good news when you’re trying to travel Switzerland on a budget.  The meatballs may not look like much, but they’re all of CHF 4 and they taste amazing – quite possibly the best breakfast sausage you’ll find on the continent.  Now that’s something considering Basel is on the German border.  If you’re passing through, you don’t want to miss this unassuming, yet delightfully Swiss restaurant in the suburbs of Basel.
