Bevagna is a little village with a large number of restaurants, around 12 at last count. Many of these restaurants are well worth a visit, but there is one that is special to me for many reasons. For one thing, it is where I went to celebrate the purchase of my house in the town. But the owner is the reason I keep going back.

Assu has style a plenty and that style is stamped on every aspect of her enotecca. The indoor space is tiny, only three tables inside and three or four outside. It is lovely to sit outside and watch the life of the village go by, and I often sit there for a glass of prosecco on a Sunday before lunch, having been taught by an older Italian friend of mine that 11.00 is too late for coffee but perfect for prosecco. Assu always has good prosecco chilled to perfection.

Inside offers lots of little diversions, so I am happy to retreat inside and enjoy the air-conditioning when it gets too hot in summer or when it is too cold in winter. Recently a party of eight of us plus two babies in buggies had to make a rapid move inside when it began to rain. Although the inside is small, once we had all settled into our places, there was room for us as well as a table of two others. A group of Americans braved the outside, so we lent them our umbrellas.

Inside the space is decorated with the wine Assu’s sells, which is set out attractively on shelves all along one wall. On the opposite wall there are photos of her family ranging from the 1960s to recent years as the grandchildren were born. This display gives the room the feeling of an eccentric woman’s elegant salon. And that is what makes it special.

Local pottery is also on sale. The jugs are based on traditional designs, but the red or white glossy pottery figures are far from traditional. They perform a variety of antics in the window of the restaurant, and on the counter at the end of the room. The display area of this is filled with other types of tempting pottery.

The menu is small and really only varies according to the season. All drinks are served with bruschetta cut into thick chunks and drenched with crisp flavored olive oil. There are also several cured meat or cheese platters. But, panzanella is a big favorite in the summer; it is very filling and so healthy. In addition, there are several pasta dishes; Assu has a reputation for cooking perfect pasta. Soft eggs, not quite scrambled, served with grated truffles are worth a try and the insalata caprese is beautiful and delicious.

This is not the kind of restaurant where you find yourself faced with a huge choice. Rather it is a one-woman business and that woman restricts herself to what she can do perfectly. Well worth a visit.
