This was one of those chance finds, one of many this time in Paris. Usually, we have a list of restaurants that we plan to eat at. Some we know from past experience and some that have been recommended. But things were different this time. We were meeting a variety of friends, some from the UK, one who lives in Paris and another from Dubai, so there were a lot of different tastes, interests and levels of experience to juggle. Add to that the fact that we were the central hub bringing these disparate people together, and it was never going to be easy.

This particular morning we were meeting two people at Grand Boulevard metro stop to have breakfast and go shopping. Well, there were many exits from the underground station out onto busy roads, and having not specified which exit, it was inevitable that we would experience difficulties meeting up.

After 30 minutes hanging out on a noisy street corner, I cracked and insisted we just choose a café and have breakfast. After a short tussle we chose La Crème de Paris. It looked clean and fresh. It was slightly down a side street, so away from the traffic noise – I am not very tolerant of this downside of city life. However they had a limited range of croissants, which caused us to hesitate, momentarily, then just forge ahead.

Then I realized that there was a heavy emphasis on gluten-free products and almost bolted. Not that I am gluten mad, I am just not sure that taking gluten out of a bread product will work. We were hungry and needed to sit down and try to text our friends. So we decided might as well do it in comfort with coffee and croissant even a gluten free one.

What an excellent choice. It was easily the best breakfast we had in Paris. The coffee was creamy, the croissant crisp. They seem to specialize in icecream and waffles but also serve crepes and juices. Everything was perfect and so clean.

Even the toilets were top quality. I have become used to the pungent nature of French and Italian toilets, so this was a bonus.

We located our friends, with difficulty due to their staunchly continuing to use a dumb phone, and they availed themselves of all the facilities the café had to offer, too, declaring it as excellent as we had pronounced it.

There is a little coda to this story; it was by far the most expensive coffee and croissant we had. But we got what we paid for, and I would go again.
