Lausanne in Switzerland has many places where foodies will feel at home. With an internationally renowned catering and hospitality college there are so many stellar foodie experiences in town. Here are just a few of the experiences in this beautiful Swiss city to enjoy.

Walk around Ouchy

Lake Geneva is a feature of Lausanne and a walk along the shore is a delight. At weekends there are lots of food stands here selling anything from crepes to falafel and walking along tasting the various flavours is a great way to experience the international feel of Lausanne. There are also many good restaurants in Ouchy too which specialise in fresh fish from the lake.

Taste Wine

Lausanne and the surrounding area is full of vineyards which are clustered into the hillsides. The wine here is excellent and so good that very little finds its way into the export market. Visitors can either take the train or the boat to Lutry, a small village on the shores of Lake Geneva and enjoy a tour of the vineyards as well as some tastings of the produce. During autumn several villages around Lausanne have wine festivals too.

Try a Fondue

In Lausanne the fondue is the specialty and this distinctive cheese dish is a must do experience in town. A moitie moitie fondue is made with a blend of Gruyere and Emmental cheese and is delicious. One of the finest places to enjoy fondue in Lausanne is Pinte Besson which is recommended by locals and is very authentic. The fondue is enjoyed best with a glass of white Swiss wine.

Browse the Market

On Tuesdays and Saturdays the market comes to Lausanne and the stalls fill the streest around Rue de Bourg and Place de la Palaud. It is a great place to look for locally produced cheeses, cakes and other food. Why not make up a picnic of all the specialties and enjoy it on a walk nearby.

Learn to Cook

Apart from attending the world famous Ecole Hôtelière de Lausanne which has courses and degrees in cooking there are many other places where learning the culinary art of French Swiss cuisine is possible. Some of the local supermarkets run cookery classes and there are many places where day workshops are held and attendees leave with a repertoire of fine recipes to try at home.

Discover Chocolate

Switzerland is renowned for its chocolate shops and Lausanne is no exception. One of the finest in town is Blondel at the bottom of Rue De Bourg. The small shop has a wide range of hand crafted chocolates which are all beautifully wrapped and taste divine. A walk around the streets will reveal some exquisite displays of cakes and chocolates which are very hard to resist when visiting Lausanne. Why not taste a few or buy some for a gift.

In Lausanne food is part of the culture and a visit to this beautiful city is not complete without tasting something from the shops and restaurants. It is a lovely way to experience the foodie delights of Lausanne.
