My French isn’t that great any longer.  It’s not that I don’t want to speak it (and, in fact, I am trying to improve it at the moment); it’s that I don’t really have people to speak with.  So, when my boyfriend and I got to Paris, I was trying to flash my French everywhere.  Perhaps I was a little too focused on the language.  I clearly wasn’t paying attention when we stepped into Le Grand Cafe Capucines near the Opéra Garnier.

It’s not that the restaurant was bad – not by any stretch of imagination.  It was fantastic; quite literally.  And, it was way too fancy for us at that moment.  It just happened to be the first place I spotted near the opera house (which is my favourite corner of Paris, and always will be).

Le Grand is incredible on the inside; the decor is breathtaking.  You actually have to see it to believe it.  As we walked in, we were offered a coat check – and given a shell with the number on it.  And then, we were shown to a table with white linen and an incredible view of the restaurant.  And that’s when we realised that perhaps we’d made a mistake.

After all, we only wanted a quick breakfast before walking around the opera house.  As soon as we pointed that out, our waiter kindly noted that they were still serving breakfast in another part of the restaurant.  It was a little less fancy, closer to the door, but still stunning.

And, although I do love an enormous English breakfast, our quick and simple continental breakfast was all we needed.  Every touch is thoughtful.  Every view is stunning (please, please take a look at their website; my happy snaps could never do it justice).  And, if only we’d been there for a fancy dinner.  Ah well, c’est la vie.
