Sam Shing Seafood market is the place that only locals know of, but only if they are serious foodies like my aunt Mary. By that I mean in and out, no sight seeing business.

The market consists of a line of seafood shops and in the vicinity there are different restaurants that will cook what you buy. Be sure to spot the big fluffy white and orange dog that sleeps on a podium in one of the seafood stalls too!

There was only the three of us, myself, mom and aunt Mary but the way my mum was selecting seafood was enough to scare even the stall seller! In HK the standard is to upsell not to down sell too. We ended up with six varieties and went straight to the restaurant opposite upon the stall seller’s recommendation. As soon as we sat down, a dragon dance was going on around outside the restaurant and the waiter knew exactly how my aunt Mary wanted to cook our catch, more than a coincidence surely.

I have to say we were all flabbergasted, which isn’t easy for tough foodies like my mother and aunt Mary. That was the greatest Chinese for me, a seafood degustation. Good news is that they are also open for dinner.

Sam Shing is easily accessible by train (Tuen Mun station), tram (Sam Shing) and then a short walk. It is easier to say that it is near the Gold Coast to locals if you are going by car. Or if you prefer to enjoy a scenic route by bus, catch the 52x from Mong Kok and it will take you right there. You will also pass what it is considered the best roast duck or goose in HK but that’s another story.
