Visitors to Burma will enjoy seeing the vibrant markets full of fresh food and the smells of sizzling street food on the go. Experiencing the cuisine in Myanmar is a must do as there are many unique and distinctive things to taste. One of the most famous dishes in Burma is Mohinga which is considered the national specialty.

Mohinga is a soup made from fish and contains thin or rice noodles. Sometimes when freshwater fish is not available it contains bean paste. In general a dish of Mohinga will contain a variety of ingredients including catfish, banana tree stem, ginger, lemongrass, fish sauce, garlic, and chickpea flour. It is served with rice noodles flavoured with onions, lime, and fish paste. To add a kick to the soup chillies are sometimes added, and coriander is another herb used which adds a very special flavour to the soup. Mohinga is served throughout the day but in Burma the best time to eat it is at breakfast. There is nothing quite like a piping hot dish of Mohinga before going to work and the locals will enjoy a bowl to start the day. It definitely beats the standard international hotel continental breakfasts for sure.

Throughout Burma there are Mohinga stalls and shops so visitors can also taste this distinctive soup. Look out for cauldrons being carried on poles through the streets and pop up stalls by the side of the road. if in doubt just ask a local and they will be only too pleased to introduce you to their favourite Mohinga seller. Mohinga is also served to monks in the monastery and it is not uncommon to come across a cauldron on the go within the grounds. On feast days Mohinga is on the menu along with other Burmese specialties. Today packet soup is also available as the country modernises but there is nothing quite like a freshly made bowl of Mohinga.

Burma has other food specialties to try whilst in the country. On feast days Ohno Khauk Swe is a very rich chicken noodle dish served in a coconut sauce. It is renowned for causing indigestion when eaten in large amounts but is worth looking out for when travelling around. Regions also have specialty foods. In Mandalay meeshay will be on the menu which is a dish of pickled tofu and rice noodles. The Dry Zone is famed for jaggery, a sugar made from palm toddy. Look out for pineapple rice in Dawei, and for durian and mango preserves in Mawlamyine. One of the best street food snacks is sticky rice wrapped in banana leaf parcels. It really is delicious.

In Myanmar there are lots of new sights, sounds and smells to get to know. The food is quite unique and one of Asia's best kept secrets. The experience of tasting Mohinga is to really get to know this country and to eat the food the Burmese love. Do have a taste, even for breakfast, and especially with a few chillies in that soup.
