I didn’t name my kids after the main characters from the Odd Couple. I swear, I didn’t.

Even though I met Jack Klugman and Tony Randall at Playhouse Square when they were performing The Odd Couple on stage, I swear I didn’t think about that when naming my kids.

Felix was named because I would have named a girl Lexington, but we found out rather early that we were expecting a boy. The feel of the name stuck.

Oscar, on the other hand, was going to be named Dillon. Or, Dylan. I wanted the former; the boys’ father wanted the latter. Less than two weeks before he was born, he became Oscar.

It was only when my father said, “Well, you’ve got an odd couple,” that I realised what had happened. And, I didn’t feel the need to change things. The names stuck.

It does mean we now have a compulsion to all things Odd Couple – and we really appreciate it when others do as well. We’re assuming that goes for the owners of Felix and Oscar’s Pub on the Cleveland Westside.

Yes, Westside. That means we had to make a big trek out to explore this establishment. We almost didn’t. Again, the Westside isn’t terribly close to my parent’s house on the far Eastside. And, it’s a pub. It’s not a pub in the way South Africans or Brits think of a pub; it’s more of an American bar.

But, really, we didn’t have much of a choice once my brother found it online.

The front exterior of this restaurant is basic. It may as well be a clinic or a small office building. Once you walk through the doors (we were greeted immediately), you feel as though you’re in for a good time. And, that can be just about any style of good (drinking) time you want.

There’s a spot that looks like a traditional English pub,

an outdoor bar that wouldn’t be out of place on the beach,

and plenty of cosy chill spots to enjoy. We sat outdoors, enjoying the sun, almost in view of the baseball game on the television.

The boys loved the idea of ordering from Felix’s Favorites and Oscar’s Delights.

But, they were never going to stray very far from the boneless chicken wings.

And I was always going to make a move for the nachos.

Sadly, the food wasn’t blow-your-mind good; I would have a difficult time making the trek to the Westside if I were going for the menu. But, just wait until my kids can legally enjoy a tasty beer in the States. They’ll definitely make the trip. Me, I’ll just savour the memories – and the sweet swag we brought home. Yes, thanks to this pub, we have Felix and Oscar branded goodies in our world. Not bad for an odd couple, hey?
