I didn’t spend Black Friday cruising the shops for the best deals a shopper could find.  Instead, I spent it strolling through the streets of London, beginning with breakfast near Hampton Court.  At Kingston upon Thames, we pulled into Bill’s to enjoy breakfast along the river.  And, I’m pretty sure that’s how you should spend your first morning in Surrey, don’t you think?

There were four of us, and each of us was feeling that starving sensation you get when you’re truly ready to eat.  And Bill’s was a perfect stop.  The breakfasts were huge, but I didn’t know that when we sat down.  Instead, I was busy staring at the decor – and training my mind to switch back to English after the German and French I was attempting to use over the past few days in Switzerland.  My boyfriend was impressed with the modern mix of welded iron and classic wood.

Almost instantly, we were drawn to the paper bag on the table.  With a pencil inside the bag, you’re meant to tick off what you want to take away.  That’s pretty clever, but more importantly, we took a look at the menus.  When you’re really hungry, it takes awhile to decide.  Rather, it takes awhile to talk yourself out of all the extras that you really want to try but know you shouldn’t splurge on.

In any case, we ordered an assortment of pancakes and more traditional English breakfasts and enjoyed the coffee with sugar cubes.  As we waited, we made plans for the day – which was largely a long walk around London town, with stops at some of our favourite spots.  And then our breakfast arrived.  If only we could eat for the whole day; instead, we shovelled it in as though we’d never eaten before.  Satisfied and happy, we left Bill’s to watch the frenzy of Black Friday in England.  Only afterwards did I discover that Bill’s is a chain.  That’s good news now that I’m hooked.
