When people think of Nepal, mountains, sherpas and wildlife come to mind. In this beautiful Himalayan country the food is also a highlight of any visit and here are some of the best things to look out for when visiting Nepal.

Newari Cooking

One of the highlights of Nepalese cooking is Newari style and comes from the people living in the Kathmandu Valley. Generally, most Nepalese cuisine is vegetarian but the Newaris are known for meat eating. The water buffalo is a popular source of food as is wild boar. Chilli is a popular ingredient and there are several restaurants in Kathmandu offering this cuisine. It tends to be eaten on special occasions in Nepal. Popular dishes to look out for include Choyla which is roasted water buffalo, and Bandhel tareko or wild boar stew.

Daal Bhaat and other Nepalese specialties

The vegetarian style of cooking seen all over Nepal is topped by Daal Bhaat which is lentils and rice. Filling and nutritious it is the stable food of the Nepalese and is even served at breakfast in some homes. Vegetables accompany a bowl of daal and there may also be chapatis. Sometimes pickles are served with daal to spice it up a bit.Aloo tareko or spiced fried potatoes are another Nepalese favourite. Wo is a lentil flour pancake. In Kathmandu there are places to learn some of the typically Nepali and Newari styles of cooking.

Tibetan Cooking

Many Tibetans live in exile in Nepal and their distinctive cooking is often found in Nepal, especially in Kathmandu. Most of the food is a variation on a theme of noodles and momos or steamed dumplings. Specialties to look out for include Thugpa which is a thick meat soup, and momo filled with meat or vegetables and steamed.

Nepalese Desserts

Like India, Nepal has a lot of sticky sugary desserts. Barfi is a fudge like sweet whilst julebi or an orange candy figure of eight are popular and seen in lots of Nepalese towns. Another favourite is Kheer or rice pudding and people also love rasbari or milk balls.

Drinks in Nepal

Tea is the national drink in Nepal and is also grown in the country. Masala tea is found all over the country where the tea leaves are boiled with spices, sugar and milk. Another variation is Tibetan tea which is served black with a dollop of yak butter and salt. For trekkkers, waking up at dawn to be greeted with a mug of tea made by the Sherpas is a wonderful start to the day.

Beer is popular in Nepal and there are several local as well as imported brands. Everest Beer is anong the more well known local varieties. Visitors may also encounter chang which is the local home brew and very potent. This is definitely not for the faint hearted and is usually fermented from potatoes or grain.

Nepal has some surprisingly good specialties in its culinary heritage which are just the thing for hungry mountain trekkers and visitors to the country.
