As much as I love gorgeous little jams, cooking extravagant meals, food trucks, and wandering around markets, I don’t do a lot of shopping at food markets. It’s not that Jozi doesn’t have them, it’s that my Saturday mornings are usually too busy for that.

(And, they’re about to become more so as I’ve enrolled for extended Saturday morning classes at the Goethe Institut.)

It’s fine, you know. It’s not as if I don’t get my fill of fun and food. I don’t need to head all the way to Bryanston for lovely jars of gourmet foods. I don’t.

But, that doesn’t mean I don’t get excited when I manage to get to a food market at exactly the right time. You know, when I am driving right past one and the boys and I all spot a taco food truck at the same moment.

That’s exactly what happened when we passed the Pirates Club in Greenside. I was driving towards the grocery store, but we were all starving. We pulled in and battled the wacky parking you get wherever there is a gravel lot.

We headed straight towards the taco truck that caught our eye, and that’s when I spotted the German food stall and the glühwein they were selling. That’s how you do food markets in Europe. At least, that’s how I do it. I kind of had to, you know.

And that’s how we ended up wandering the food stalls for half an hour before we backtracked to the tacos. That’s also how we found ourselves with fresh lemonade, a sampling of meats and jams, and the most delicious olives anyone could ever imagine.

Then we tucked into the tacos. Though a little on the small side – and the expensive side – they were totally worth it. They made our morning and, in fact, reminded all three of us that we need to make a point to hit more markets. At the very least, I’ll head back to Pirates for the unlikely combination of glühwein and tacos.
