We were staying in Ximending in Taipei, an area that is full of buzz, as there are a few large intersecting pedestrian zones with a myriad of shops and restaurants to explore.

It was time for lunch, so we were on the look out for what was open for lunch...we ended up walking into a building and noticed that there was yum cha on offer. We decided to give it a go.

When we walked into the restaurant, it was like a walk back in time, as the decor reminded me of the older style yum cha restaurants. We read a sign on the wall, and it proudly stated that the restaurant offered traditional Hong Kong style yum cha dishes where the wait staff will come by with trolleys of food for you to select the dishes you'd like. Ironically, we were in Hong Kong a few days ago, and the yum cha place we went to in Hong Kong offered the newer "tick box" menus where you chose what you wanted on the menu paper (rather than the traditional food trolleys).

The food itself was quite nice. There was also the sound of chirping birds in the background, which added to the ambience (in Hong Kong, back in the days, it was a popular past time to have birds. As such, bird cages were often present in yum cha restaurants as bird owners enjoyed a meal - as it was common to take your bird out with you). So, if you want to experience old school yum cha in Taiwan, this place is certainly worth a visit.
