One hot evening  recently I met a group of friends for drinks at Panella. It is a bakery and popular meeting spot not very far from Termini in Rome but away from the hustle and bustle.  There is ample outdoor space and this, as far as I could see, is where everyone sits. I was having such a good time, I did not look to see if there were tables inside.

But there is a reason to go inside. With each round of drinks, you get a ticket that entitles you to select food to accompany your drink. It is a little like tapas.

On the right as you enter there are serving bays loaded with snacks and these are constantly being replaced fresh from the bakery. You hand your ticket to the person serving the food; then you tell him or her what you want. If you do not know the Italian words for the foods, you just point. It seems to me that how much you get is directly related to how bold you are and how much you are willing to have laden onto your plate.

There are little sections of pizza, little arancia, prosciutto on bread sticks, anchovies on bruschetta and much more.

The drinks are on the expensive side – about  twelve euros – but this has to be balanced against the food that accompanies it. After several apperativi, I have no use for dinner, so it is drinks and dinner combined.

Because we were a large party and numerous bottles of prosecco where ordered, the waiters just handed our team leader, a local Roman it must be admitted, a stack of cards. We were unable to use them all.

In the really good bars in Rome it is normal to pay a lot for the drinks, but they usually come with delicious food. However, the selection at Panella is something else.

Also, it is nice to go somewhere where Romans go on a daily basis. It is not exactly off the tourist trail, but what has happened is that savvy tourists have moved onto the locals’ patch.

The night I was there it was a very hot evening, but that was ameliorated by the fans that sprayed a cooling mist across our group as we settled back to enjoy ourselves.
