February is a great time to enjoy tropical fruits and one of the best of the bunch is passionfruit which are in season at this time. These distinctive fruits are native to Paraguay, Brazil, and Argentina. Here are some of the best ways to enjoy the taste of passionfruit.

Pick Them Ripe

Passion fruit are best enjoyed ripe. Choose passionfruit that have a dark purple shell. The inner fruit is eaten and not the hard shell exterior. The softer the shell the riper the fruit will be.Do shake the fruit before buying as the heavier the fruit and the noisier the more flesh is likely to be inside the shell. A ripe passionfruit will also smell fruity.

Mix it with Meringues

The distinctive taste of passionfruit goes well with sweet dishes such as meringues. Ice cream is another great combination, and this fruit is excellent with yoghurt.Try passionfruit cheesecake for a naughty but nice dessert and with a gorgeous flavour. Passionfruit also goes well with other tropical fruits so do experiment when creating a Baked Alaska or a meringue nest.

Jam Making is Fun

Passionfruit makes excellent jam which can be spread on cakes and bread, The sharp taste blends well with sweeter flavours. Passionfruit curd is another way of using these fruits and this is superb spread on desserts. For those passionate about the passionfruit another great combination for jam making is to combine these fruits with raspberries for a delicious summery flavour.

Have a drink

Fruit juices are full of vitamins so squeezing a few passionfruits is an ideal way to enjoy a refreshing drink. Another way to make the most of these fruits is to combine the juice with a margarita and chill out with a cocktail or two. Served with a slice of lemon they are a perfect way to add a little passion to a drink.
