For visitors to Seattle, the famous market at Pike Place is a must see sight. It is full of the freshest food around and the atmosphere is very special. This bustling market was opened in 1907 and is now used by hundreds of Washington State farmers selling produce. Many sell within the arccade itself but the white tents outside with stalls are also busy with all that food to sell. The market is open 7 days a week and is located between Pine Street and Stewart Street.

One of the first things to strike anyone visiting the market are the colours of all the fruits and vegetables. I'd definitely advise bringing a large shopping bag and planning for a picnic because it is so tempting to the senses. From peaches to cherries, and apples the choices are vast. It is also lovely to talk to the growers who will tell you all about their goods in between selling it to customers. I found stalls with dried fruits too which are ideal as gifts.

Fish is a big part of the Pike Place Market scene. With huge Pacific salmon being sold here it is a busy place and attracts traders from miles around. One of the highlights is to watch out for the fish teams throwing a salmon through the air, and catching it of course. There are rows of Dungeness crabs all waiting for a buyer, and all manner of fresh seafood on sale here. For a cook it is really inspirational just to see the displays and stir a few creative thoughts. Most of the fish is from the Pacific North West and Alaskan waters and is worth visiting just to see the fish alone.

Walk around Pike Place Market taking in the huge fresh flower displays and the deals being struck and there is even more to see. Local cheeses are sold here along with meats and condiments. I also saw cakes and sweets for sale and a host of home baked pies. For anyone wondering what to cook for the evening meal, this place is full of ideas and designed to get people to enjoy fresh food.

Seattle is also famous for its coffee and there are lots of small places to grab a cup whilst taking a break from the busy market scene. There are also opportunities to watch cookery demonstrations here and to participate in a lesson on a particular culinary theme.Of course, just engaging in some conversation with the food producers such as a local beekeeper or grower is what makes this place so special and interesting.

If you are interested in where food comes from and enjoy seeing the finest quality fish and other frsh produce on display then spend time at Pike Place Market in Seattle. Luckily there is a small park nearby which is ideal for a picnic of all the treats purchased whilst wandering around. It is one of those places that is impossible to come out of without buying something so do taste something from Pike Place when visiting Seattle.
