Spirito Divino is a successful company operating food outlets in Bevagna (more on that soon) and near Montefalco.

The restaurant near Montefalco is a large building set in substantial grounds down the hill from Montefalco towards Chiesa Madonna della Stella (a large church). It may be a little hard to find at first, but you are driving through some of the most beautiful countryside you can imagine, so relax. You will get there eventually.

It is fun in the summer as the tables are outside, the air is cool because of the swathes of grass that surround the building, and a good time can be had by all. In addition, there is a supervised playground with a bouncy castle. There is a charge for this, but if you have had kids underfoot all holidays, it might be just the break you are looking for.

When it first opened, the only alcohol served was beer, but now they serve wine as well. The power of popular demand is strong. Those patate fritte with mayonnaise - fat on top of starch cooked in fat - FANTASTIC!

I am usually a starter for pizza, but I am having trouble getting to grips with pizza by the yard. It is possible to order a yard with three flavours. In theory this is all very well, but they do bleed into each other, and if you like your food to stay in its own little area, this will alarm you. The flavour you can see in the middle is my choice - pear and walnut!

It is a thick crust pizza, so here I am going to complain that there is always too much food. I know, it is not a real complaint. But I do feel bad about the amount of waste.

I visited most recently in the winter and decided that despite the graciousness of the host, and the delicious pizza toppings, I will save it for the summer in the future. In the winter there is a supervised playroom for the children inside. It is not as exciting as the outside version, but it does mean the kids are corralled to some extent. I love the way Italians bring their kids with them on most social occasions; it is how they get to be so well socialized, but Italians have no notion of how to speak quietly, nor do their kids. Like a lot of Italian restaurants, blessed as they are with marble or tiles, Spirito Divino Pizzaria can be very noisy in winter. It is not the kids, but the adults that create the hubbub. No, outside is best for me.

But the restaurant in Bevagna is another story.
